Francistown Hawkers Empowered Through SMEGA and BTC Vendor Education Session. Local hawkers in Francistown received practical guidance today during a community engagement session aimed at expanding economic opportunities through vendor registration and financial literacy.

The outreach, facilitated by representatives from the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), focused on educating participants on how to register as official SMEGA electricity vendors and begin selling BTC airtime. These income-generating avenues were presented as part of ongoing efforts to support small informal traders with scalable tools to grow their businesses.

Participants were also introduced to the fundamentals of investing, with a particular focus on the process of buying BTC shares. The information session aimed to demystify public shareholding, encouraging local traders to consider long-term participation in Botswana’s corporate economy.

Attendees engaged actively, asking questions about registration requirements, pricing structures, and the technical setup required to operate as vendors. Many expressed appreciation for the hands-on support and expressed interest in beginning the registration process immediately.

The initiative forms part of BTC’s broader #BTC45Years campaign, celebrating over four decades of connecting Batswana. With a focus on digital inclusion and community upliftment, BTC continues to roll out programmes aimed at bridging the gap between large-scale infrastructure and informal economic players.
