Tsabong Multi-Species Abattoir to Begin Operations in April. After years of anticipation and several delays, the Tsabong Multi-Species Abattoir (TMSA) is finally set to open its doors next month. The announcement was made by Mr. Eric Gabaake, TMSA Production Manager, during a recent Tsabong District Council meeting, confirming that the facility will begin operations in April.
The high-tech abattoir is designed to process beef, small stock, and game meat, catering to both domestic consumption and international export markets. Its opening marks a significant milestone for the Tsabong region, which has long awaited the economic and industrial benefits that the facility is expected to bring.
Mr. Gabaake emphasized that the abattoir will not only enhance meat production capacity but also create numerous jobs for local residents. In addition, the facility is expected to stimulate related industries such as leather tanning and packaging, further contributing to regional economic growth.
However, the announcement was met with mixed reactions from councillors. Concerns were raised regarding the proposed P53 per kilogramme pricing structure for purchasing livestock. Some councillors argued that the rate is too low compared to prices offered by local butcheries, potentially discouraging farmers from selling to the abattoir.
Despite these concerns, the opening of TMSA is widely regarded as a major development for Tsabong and the broader Kgalagadi District. The facility’s ability to handle multiple species positions it as a versatile hub for Botswana’s meat industry, with potential to expand the country’s footprint in international markets.
As April approaches, preparations are underway to ensure smooth operations from the outset. The abattoir is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Botswana’s agricultural value chain, supporting farmers, and contributing to food security while opening new avenues for export growth.
