Tsabong Multi-Species Abattoir Project Completed, Opening Doors for Economic Growth. The Tsabong Multi-Species Abattoir has officially been completed, marking a key milestone for Botswana’s agricultural and agribusiness sectors. Built at a cost of P210 million, the facility was recently handed over by IPS Botswana, the construction company, to the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture.
Launched in 2021, the project is designed to strengthen Botswana’s livestock value chain and unlock new opportunities for business diversification in the Tsabong region. During the handover ceremony, the Ministry’s Director of Projects and Procurement, and also the project engineer, Mr Ofentse Kgaogano, confirmed that the facility is now at a “plug and play stage,” ready for operationalization.
The abattoir is equipped with modern infrastructure that positions it to meet both domestic and potential export requirements. Key features include an administration block, clinic, canteen, slaughter hall, rendering plant, mini-conference room, chillers, a livestock receiving block, workshop, portable water plant, lavatories, and a waste-water plant. This integrated design ensures efficiency while maintaining compliance with health and safety standards.
For businesses and entrepreneurs in Botswana, particularly in the agricultural sector, the completion of this facility presents potential growth avenues. Livestock farmers, meat processors, suppliers, and service providers in areas such as logistics and cold storage could benefit from the opportunities generated. Moreover, the abattoir is expected to stimulate economic activity in Tsabong, creating a ripple effect that supports local employment and ancillary industries.
The project also aligns with Botswana’s broader strategy to diversify its economy beyond diamonds, placing emphasis on agriculture, food security, and regional development. As stakeholders now look toward the operational phase, attention will be on how quickly the abattoir can be brought into full use to maximize its economic impact.
