Standard Chartered Launches $300 Million Facility to Empower SMEs in Mining. Standard Chartered Bank has underscored the importance of supplier finance in ensuring Botswana’s mining sector delivers broader economic benefits to local businesses and communities.

Speaking at the Future of Mining Summit, Chamu Mugangavari, Executive Director for Corporate and Investment Banking, announced that the bank, in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has established a US$300 million supplier finance facility aimed at supporting small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs).

Mugangavari explained that many SMEs located around mining operations face challenges in securing working capital and meeting collateral requirements needed to supply large mining companies. The new financing facility seeks to address these barriers by improving access to affordable capital, enabling local businesses to participate more meaningfully in mining supply chains.

He emphasized that shared prosperity in the mining sector will depend not only on mineral production but also on empowering citizen‑owned enterprises to benefit from mining‑related economic activity. By strengthening SME participation, the initiative aims to create more inclusive and sustainable growth across Botswana’s economy.

The facility represents a significant step toward building resilience in the mining value chain, offering SMEs the opportunity to expand their operations, create jobs, and contribute to local development. It also highlights the role of financial institutions in driving economic diversification by aligning investment with national priorities.

Standard Chartered’s partnership with IFC reflects a broader commitment to fostering inclusive growth, SME empowerment, and sustainable mining. By bridging the financing gap, the initiative is expected to strengthen the link between mining and community prosperity, ensuring that the sector delivers long‑term value beyond mineral extraction.
