Standard Chartered Champions Transition Finance to Drive Sustainable Growth in Botswana’s Mining Sector. Standard Chartered Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable transition finance and ESG-linked investments across Botswana and the broader region, aligning with the nation’s growing focus on responsible growth within key industries such as mining.
Speaking at the Global Expo Botswana 2025 during a panel on Mining and Critical Minerals, Mr. Chamo Mugangavari, Senior Corporate and Investment Principal at Standard Chartered Botswana, outlined how the bank is leveraging its international footprint to mobilize financing that supports companies transitioning toward greener operations.
“We have very solid credentials,” Mr. Mugangavari stated, emphasizing Standard Chartered’s deep experience in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and transition finance. He described transition finance as a critical mechanism for enabling carbon-intensive sectors to evolve sustainably without compromising productivity or competitiveness.
Mr. Mugangavari underscored that effective transition finance depends on structure and accountability. “Investors need to see clear, well-defined strategies with measurable outcomes and timelines,” he explained. “A framework aligned with market expectations builds the confidence funders require to invest.”
He cautioned that while many companies are engaging in sustainability efforts, inadequate documentation and disclosure often limit their ability to secure financing. “Without transparent reporting, firms miss opportunities to demonstrate their ESG performance to potential funders,” he said, highlighting that credible reporting helps investors assess real progress and impact.
With operations in 54 global markets and a strong local presence, Standard Chartered is uniquely positioned to connect Botswana’s development priorities with global sustainable capital. The bank’s approach aims to unlock long-term value for both investors and local communities, supporting Botswana’s transition toward a resilient, low-carbon economy.
