Standard Chartered Botswana Marks 129 Years of Financial Resilience. Standard Chartered Bank Botswana is celebrating 129 years of service, highlighting its enduring role in shaping the country’s financial landscape and supporting generations of businesses and individuals.Since its establishment, the bank has played a pivotal role in facilitating government operations and enabling citizens to access housing, vehicles, and investments. Its legacy is deeply intertwined with Botswana’s economic growth and development.
Chief Executive Officer Mpho Masupe attributes this longevity to a disciplined, long-term approach. He emphasized that cautious risk management and strong governance have enabled the bank to withstand economic cycles while maintaining robust asset quality. Even amid subdued activity and tightening credit demand, the bank has preserved a strong non-performing loans ratio, deliberately moderating retail lending growth to protect its balance sheet.
The bank’s Wealth & Retail Banking segment has delivered notable results, with Assets Under Management rising from P196 million to P544 million, a 179% increase. This growth stems from a strategic pivot toward advisory-led services targeting affluent clients, deepening engagement with existing customers, and leveraging global expertise to provide solutions such as foreign exchange and investment advisory.
Beyond financial performance, Standard Chartered has consistently supported national development. It has facilitated major transactions, partnered with government initiatives, and provided critical financing for public and private sector growth. Recent approvals, including Parliament’s sanctioning of P8.5 billion in debt financing — comprising a P750 million facility and a €400 million facility — underscore its continued role in infrastructure and fiscal operations.
Masupe also addressed ongoing discussions around the sale of the bank’s Botswana operations, expected within 12 to 15 months as part of a global strategic realignment. He assured clients and staff that service delivery and longstanding relationships will remain unaffected, emphasizing continuity and transparency.
With strong capitalization, loyal customers, and a disciplined strategy, Standard Chartered Bank Botswana’s 129-year journey reflects resilience, trust, and foresight — principles that continue to anchor its contribution to national growth and economic stability.
