Standard Bank Invests in OPay to Expand Digital Finance Across AAfrica. Standard Bank Group has signed an agreement to invest in OPay, a digital financial services platform primarily operating in Nigeria, as the banking group looks to expand digital financial services and financial inclusion across Africa.

The investment was announced on 13 October 2026 and is expected to be completed concurrently with, or shortly after, OPay’s proposed initial public offering (IPO), subject to the completion of the offering and relevant regulatory approvals.

OPay has filed a registration statement with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and applied to list its American Depositary Shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

The investment forms part of a broader strategic relationship between the two companies. Standard Bank and OPay also plan to explore opportunities to make selected Standard Bank products and services available through OPay’s consumer and merchant platform.

Potential areas of cooperation include digital banking, payments, merchant acquiring, lending, remittances and the development of new financial products.

Standard Bank Group Chief Executive Sim Tshabalala said the partnership would bring together Standard Bank’s African banking presence and expertise with OPay’s digital capabilities and merchant ecosystem.

The collaboration is intended to support wider access to financial services and cross-border commerce, although specific initiatives will depend on further agreements and the required regulatory approvals.

Standard Bank operates across 21 African markets and has identified digital transformation, intra-African trade and financial inclusion as priorities within its broader growth strategy.

The proposed relationship with OPay provides the group with an opportunity to explore digital channels for delivering financial services to consumers and businesses.
