Stanbic Bank Expands Tree Planting Drive with New Donation to BBUAN. Stanbic Bank has donated 100 fruit trees to the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources as part of its Blue Roots tree planting initiative, marking Earth Day commemorations held on Wednesday.

The donation forms part of an ongoing collaboration between the bank and BUAN, focused on advancing environmental sustainability, strengthening food security, and supporting community development. The initiative builds on previous contributions, with BUAN noting that 2,000 fruit trees were donated in 2003.

Speaking at the event, BUAN Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Moatlhodi Kgosimore, described the occasion as a significant milestone in the partnership. He highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration in addressing environmental and agricultural challenges through practical interventions such as tree planting.

Stanbic Bank Botswana’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mmoloki Letshwao, said the initiative reflects a long-term commitment rather than a once-off effort. He outlined the bank’s broader plan to plant 22,500 trees over the next three years, with targets set at 5,000 trees in 2026, 7,500 in 2027, and 10,000 in 2028.

According to Letshwao, the programme is driven by multiple objectives, including addressing climate change, promoting biodiversity, and improving food security. He added that the initiative is also intended to support economic opportunities through job creation and the development of carbon credit programmes.

The Blue Roots initiative aligns with Stanbic Bank’s wider sustainability agenda across Africa, reflecting a growing focus among financial institutions on environmental responsibility and community impact. Tree planting projects such as this are increasingly being used as practical tools to contribute to ecological preservation while delivering social and economic benefits.

The latest donation to BUAN reinforces the role of partnerships between academic institutions and the private sector in advancing sustainability goals. As the programme expands, it is expected to continue contributing to environmental conservation efforts while supporting agricultural development and community resilience in Botswana.
