Recovery Window Opens for Flood-Hit Pandamatenga Farmers. Farmers in Pandamatenga are holding onto hope following severe flooding that left thousands of hectares of farmland underwater after heavy rains earlier this month.
The agricultural region, widely regarded as one of Botswana’s key food production areas, experienced significant flooding after intense downpours on January 21. The storm reportedly delivered more than 150mm of rain, submerging over 8,000 hectares of crops. Affected fields included sorghum, sunflower, maize, onions, tomatoes, and beans, raising concern about potential impacts on national food supplies.
Pandamatenga plays a vital role in Botswana’s agricultural output, contributing nearly half of the country’s total crop production. The area is especially known for large-scale grain farming, including sorghum, millet, beans, wheat, and chickpeas. It is also home to grain storage silos with a capacity of about 90,000 metric tonnes, reinforcing its importance to national food security.
Despite the scale of the flooding, agricultural officials say recovery remains possible if conditions improve in the coming weeks. According to Ms Emeliah Magosi, an agronomist with the Department of Crop Production working with Pandamatenga Commercial Farmers, the situation is not without hope. She indicated that the key factor now is for floodwaters to recede and for soil moisture levels to return to a workable state.
If fields dry out in time, farmers may still be able to replant within the remaining agricultural window, which extends into February and March for the Pandamatenga area. This timeframe offers an opportunity to salvage part of the growing season, depending on how quickly land conditions stabilise.
The coming weeks will be critical in determining the extent of recovery, as farmers and agricultural authorities monitor water levels and soil conditions across the affected farmlands.
