President Boko Visits Hemp Research Project Exploring Botswana’s Agricultural Future. President Advocate Duma Boko has visited the National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NARDI) Hemp Research Site in Sebele to assess progress on the Hemp Pilot Project, which is investigating the potential of industrial hemp to support Botswana’s agricultural transformation and economic diversification.

During the visit, President Boko toured the research facility and received an overview of the hemp varieties currently being studied. Researchers showcased more than 100 hemp plants, including Sativa varieties, which are now ready for harvesting and evaluation as part of the ongoing pilot project.

The research initiative is assessing the suitability of industrial hemp cultivation under Botswana’s climatic conditions while examining its potential role in sustainable agricultural development.

According to the project, the findings will help determine whether industrial hemp can become a viable agricultural crop capable of supporting new economic opportunities within the country.

The Hemp Pilot Project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to diversify Botswana’s economy by encouraging the development of innovative, high-value and climate-resilient agricultural industries. The initiative aligns with strategies aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on the diamond sector by expanding opportunities in other areas of the economy.

Researchers are also evaluating the potential of industrial hemp to contribute to investment, job creation and value addition. The project is expected to provide information that will guide future policy decisions on the development of the sector.

If the research demonstrates that industrial hemp can be successfully cultivated under local conditions, the project could support the establishment of a new industry with opportunities across agriculture, manufacturing and export markets.

The Sebele research site is expected to generate evidence that will assist policymakers in determining the feasibility of developing a competitive industrial hemp industry in Botswana.

President Boko’s visit highlights the government’s interest in research initiatives that explore new opportunities for agricultural development and economic diversification, with the pilot project serving as one of several efforts aimed at identifying sectors that could contribute to Botswana’s long-term economic growth beyond traditional industries.
