President Boko Unveils Aviation Investments to Strengthen Tourism and Trade. President Duma Gideon Boko has reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to positioning aviation as a key driver of economic transformation, with major investments aimed at boosting tourism, trade, and regional connectivity.

Speaking at the Aviation Pitso 2025 conference hosted at Maun Lodge, President Boko said a competitive and efficient aviation sector was central to the country’s growth agenda. “Aviation is not just about planes; it’s about competitiveness, opportunity, and delivery. Our skies must open up to better connect Botswana with the region and the world,” he told delegates.

The conference, themed “Unlocking Botswana’s Air Transport Potential: Enhancing Connectivity, Competitiveness and Compliance”, brought together government officials, airline executives, and business leaders to discuss strategies for the aviation industry.

In the 2025/26 National Budget, government has allocated P351 million toward aviation development. Priority projects include the upgrading of airports in Maun, Kasane, and PG Matante, which are key gateways for both tourism and regional trade. Investments will also target improved safety systems and the modernization of aviation information technology.

For local entrepreneurs, these upgrades are expected to create new opportunities in hospitality, logistics, retail, and service industries linked to air travel. Increased connectivity is also anticipated to open new markets for Botswana’s exports, strengthening trade across the Southern African region.

President Boko further emphasized the revitalization of Air Botswana, outlining a plan to streamline operations, invest in fleet maintenance, and explore strategic partnerships. He stressed that the national carrier must operate on sustainable business principles while serving as a symbol of reliability and national pride.

“Aviation is the heartbeat of our future economy,” President Boko concluded. “If we get aviation right, we will get tourism right, trade right, and jobs right.”
