President Boko Highlights Tourism as Central to Botswana’s Economic Transformation. Tourism continues to stand as one of Botswana’s most powerful economic pillars, with President Advocate Duma Boko reaffirming its critical role in shaping the nation’s growth during his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.
Addressing Parliament, President Boko described tourism as a cornerstone of Botswana’s socio-economic development, highlighting its capacity to generate employment, drive rural empowerment, and attract foreign investment. He noted that the sector’s vast value chain makes it one of the country’s most inclusive economic drivers.
“Tourism remains vital in the economy of Botswana. With its extensive value chain and labour absorption capacity, it is acknowledged as a tool for economic development, playing a significant role in responding to the country’s socio-economic challenges. The sector is also a significant foreign exchange earner,” he said.
President Boko outlined government’s vision to double international tourist arrivals within the next five years, a goal that could deepen the sector’s contribution to the national GDP and further stimulate private sector participation
He also celebrated the increasing empowerment of local communities, emphasizing how tourism partnerships have transformed livelihoods in regions such as Ngamiland and Makgadikgadi. “Our fellow citizens are becoming active participants in the tourism economy,” he stated, citing joint ventures in Khwai and Mababe that have drawn P72 million in investment and created 127 jobs.
The President’s address underscored a clear message for Botswana’s business community — that collaboration, innovation, and sustainable investment in tourism are essential to unlocking new economic opportunities.
