Pandamatenga Farmers Gear Up for Bumper Sorghum Harvest, Set to Meet National Demand. The Pandamatenga Commercial Farmers Association is optimistic about a highly successful harvest season, with projections indicating that this year’s sorghum yield will not only be strong but sufficient to meet Botswana’s annual national demand.

Speaking on behalf of the Association, CEO Lilian Scheepers confirmed that they expect to produce approximately 65,000 tonnes of sorghum and 20,000 tonnes of other grains, a development that is set to significantly boost food security and reduce import reliance.

“This promising outlook is the result of favourable rainfall, strong planning, and the unwavering commitment of our farmers,” Scheepers noted.

Botswana’s current annual sorghum requirement stands at 60,000 tonnes, making this year’s anticipated output a major milestone for the local agricultural sector. If achieved, it could position Pandamatenga as a leading contributor to Botswana’s goal of self-sufficiency in staple grain production.

Located in the country’s northern agricultural belt, Pandamatenga has long been a key region for commercial farming. Over the years, its farming community has invested in advanced equipment, sustainable farming practices, and strategic crop rotation systems to optimise output.

This year’s bumper harvest is expected to create ripple effects across the economy, including increased grain supply for agro-processors, improved income for farmers, and enhanced food price stability. It also opens potential avenues for export within the SADC region, should domestic demand be fully met.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs, especially in agribusiness and food manufacturing, this development signals valuable opportunities for sourcing local inputs, strengthening supply chains, and fostering national value addition.
