Palapye to Host Launch of Commemorative P50 Banknote. Members of the public are invited to attend the official issuance of Botswana’s Commemorative P50 banknote, set to take place on 6 February 2026 at Palapye Junction Mall. The public event marks the introduction of a limited-edition banknote that will enter circulation alongside the current P50 note.
According to the Bank of Botswana, the commemorative note will be legal tender but produced in limited quantities. It will circulate together with the existing P50 banknote that carries the portrait of Botswana’s first President, Sir Seretse Khama. Unlike the current note, which may be reprinted when necessary, the commemorative edition will not be reproduced. It will remain in circulation until it is gradually withdrawn through the normal wear and tear process that affects banknotes over time.
The new banknote incorporates design features that highlight Botswana’s heritage and national achievements, while maintaining the tourism theme already associated with the P50 denomination. Among its notable design elements is the portrait of the Bank of Botswana’s redeveloped headquarters, known as the PulaThebe building. The banknote also features the Motswedi diamond, recognized as the second-largest diamond ever discovered in the world. The stone was unearthed at Lucara’s Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana.
The issuance event in Palapye provides an opportunity for the public to witness the unveiling of the commemorative note and learn more about its design and significance. The Bank of Botswana has extended an open invitation, encouraging community members and interested stakeholders to attend the occasion.
The introduction of the commemorative P50 adds a distinctive element to Botswana’s currency landscape while preserving continuity with the country’s existing banknote series.
