Orapa Mine Remains Central to Debswana’s Diamond Future. At the African Mining Summit in Gaborone, Debswana Chief Technical Officer Bokani Motlhabani reaffirmed the enduring importance of Orapa Mine, describing it as a cornerstone of Botswana’s diamond industry with strong prospects for the future.

Often overshadowed by Jwaneng Mine, known globally as the “King of Mines” for its unmatched diamond value, Orapa continues to play a vital role in Debswana’s long-term production strategy. Motlhabani reminded delegates that Orapa is where Botswana’s diamond journey began, and its contribution to both the company and the national economy remains significant.

“Orapa Mine, where it all began, is here to stay,” Motlhabani said, dismissing speculation about possible care-and-maintenance measures. He explained that Orapa provides a diverse range of diamond profiles, including industrial diamonds, which strengthen Debswana’s ability to meet dynamic market demands.

“As we go deeper, the grades improve, and the quality of stones gets even better — offering exactly the variety the market wants,” he added.

While Jwaneng transitions into an underground operation, requiring multibillion-dollar investment and expected to see reduced output during development, Orapa’s open-cast mining operations continue to provide cost efficiency and stability. Motlhabani emphasized that this balance between the two mines gives Debswana the strategic flexibility to sustain production volumes and meet customer expectations despite changing global conditions.

For Botswana’s business community, Orapa’s sustained performance underscores the broader value of diversified production and operational resilience in an evolving mining landscape. As Botswana seeks to maximize returns from its mineral resources, Orapa’s continued expansion reinforces the country’s reputation as a reliable global diamond supplier.
