NACB CEO Urges Stronger E-Commerce Profile to Unlock Content Monetisation. The National Arts Council of Botswana (NACB) has called for the strengthening of Botswana’s e-commerce footprint as a critical step toward unlocking content monetisation opportunities on global digital platforms.

Speaking during a recent engagement with the creative sector, NACB CEO Gaokgakala Lemmenyane explained that platforms such as Meta and TikTok assess factors including advertising activity, online spending, and regulatory frameworks before enabling monetisation features in a particular country.

“A lot of individuals here must start transacting online. We must start buying online on the e-commerce platforms that are available so we can build an e-commerce profile that shows companies there is money being spent from Botswana,” Lemmenyane said.

He added that taxation is also a key consideration for global platforms when assessing new markets, as clarity is required on how revenue generated from a country would be taxed. According to Lemmenyane, population size is not a limiting factor in enabling monetisation. Instead, the volume of online financial transactions is what signals market readiness.

“Our population has got nothing to do with our ability to monetise. If there are significant financial transactions online coming out of Botswana, you will see content monetisation happening,” he said.

Lemmenyane emphasised that stronger online advertising, increased digital spending, and a more active e-commerce ecosystem would ultimately make Botswana a more viable market for content monetisation. He noted that building this profile requires collective participation from individuals, businesses, and institutions to demonstrate the country’s digital readiness.

The remarks highlight the growing importance of digital infrastructure and consumer behaviour in shaping opportunities for Botswana’s creative sector. By strengthening its e-commerce profile, the country could unlock new pathways for creators to earn revenue and expand their reach on global platforms.
