Mogoma Platform Offers Community-Based Alternative for Parcel Delivery in BBotswana. A locally developed technology platform is introducing a new approach to sending packages across Botswana by connecting people who need to send parcels with drivers already travelling between towns.
The platform, known as Mogoma, offers an alternative to conventional courier services by making use of existing journeys. Instead of relying solely on dedicated delivery trips, Mogoma enables drivers to transport parcels along routes they are already planning to travel.
The concept is inspired by the Setswana phrase “Mo tshwarele gone hoo,” which refers to making use of someone who is already going in a particular direction. Mogoma applies this idea through a digital platform that allows parcels to be carried alongside routine travel.
According to Otsogile Onalepelo, CEO and Lead Engineer at Recotech (Pty) Ltd trading as AiGeniX, the company behind Mogoma, the platform formalises a practice that many people already rely on informally. “Many people already send packages through friends, buses or taxis informally,” Onalepelo said. “We are simply organising this behaviour into a structured, safer and more efficient system using technology.”
Mogoma is designed to support everyday delivery needs, including sending clothes to family members, transporting documents, delivering small business stock, or moving personal items between towns. Users list their parcels on the platform, while drivers travelling on matching routes can view available packages and select those that fit their available space. Collection and delivery arrangements are then made through the system.
The platform also creates opportunities for drivers to earn additional income by carrying parcels during trips they were already making. Developers of Mogoma have indicated that the platform is intended to complement, rather than replace, traditional courier services by offering a flexible and community-driven option.
As smartphone usage continues to grow in Botswana, platforms like Mogoma are positioning themselves as tools to improve access to services while reducing costs and delivery times for users across the country.
