MMG Board Approves P11 Billion Khoemacau Copper Mine Expansion. MMG Limited has approved a major expansion of the Khoemacau Copper Mine in Botswana, following a decision by the company’s Board of Directors to proceed with a multi billion pula investment aimed at significantly increasing production capacity.
According to details released by the company, the expansion will lift Khoemacau’s annual copper production capacity to 130,000 tonnes, while silver output is expected to exceed 4 million ounces per year. The project represents a substantial scale up of MMG’s copper operations in Botswana and forms part of the company’s longer term development plans for the asset.
The approved expansion includes extending mining activities into the Zone 5 North, Mango and Zeta North East deposits. These developments will be supported by the construction of a new processing plant with a capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per annum. Once the new facility is operational, total milling capacity at Khoemacau is expected to exceed 8.0 million tonnes per annum.
MMG has estimated total capital expenditure for the expansion at approximately US$900 million, which is equivalent to more than P11 billion. This figure includes capital spending planned ahead of 2026. The company has indicated that first copper concentrate from the expanded operation is targeted for the first half of 2028.
In addition to higher production volumes, MMG expects the expansion to improve operating efficiency at the mine. Life of mine average C1 cash costs are forecast to fall below US$1.60 per pound, compared to US$2.05 per pound reported for the six months ended June 2025.
MMG stated that the expansion strengthens the long term economics of the Khoemacau operation and positions it as a key asset within the company’s global copper portfolio. The company also noted potential for further expansion, with production capacity possibly increasing to as much as 200,000 tonnes per year. A pre feasibility study for the next phase of development is scheduled to commence in 2026.
