Mining Summit 2026 Calls for Diversification and Shared Prosperity. The upcoming Future of Mining Summit 2026 will focus on how Botswana can leverage its mineral wealth to drive economic diversification and ensure shared prosperity. Speaking at the pre-event launch and stakeholder engagement in Gaborone, Summit Chairperson and Morupule Coal Mine CEO Edwin Elias said this year’s theme, “Mining for Transformation: Economic Diversification & Shared Prosperity,” reflects the urgent need to strengthen Botswana’s economy beyond diamonds.

Elias acknowledged the historic role diamonds have played in transforming Botswana’s economy but cautioned that volatility in the global diamond market highlights the importance of building new economic pillars for sustainable growth. He stressed that Botswana has a major opportunity to harness critical minerals and emerging mining opportunities to diversify revenue streams, attract investment, stimulate industrialisation, and create jobs, while continuing to support the long-term sustainability of the diamond sector.

He further emphasized that mining must move beyond generating national revenue to contribute directly to community development, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, and skills development.

The summit will place strong emphasis on beneficiation, local supply chain participation, exploration investment, talent development, and inclusive growth. Elias noted that these areas are critical to ensuring Botswana maximizes the full developmental impact of its mineral resources.

Stakeholders from across the mining industry are expected to engage in discussions on how to align mining with broader national goals of diversification and resilience. The summit aims to position Botswana as a leader in sustainable resource management while ensuring that the benefits of mining reach ordinary citizens.
