MDCB Mourns Passing of CEO Matome Tsholetsa Malema. The Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB) has announced with deep sadness the passing of its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Matome Tsholetsa Malema, affectionately known as “MTM.” Mr. Malema had led the organisation since 2022 and was widely respected across the mining industry for his leadership and expertise.

With a career spanning more than 35 years in the global mining sector, Mr. Malema brought extensive experience in base metals, diamonds, and mining services. He held senior leadership roles at several prominent organisations, including BCL Limited, Debswana Diamond Company, Bateman Engineering, Discovery Metals, Lucara Diamond Corporation, JoyGlobal Africa, and Komatsu Mining Corporation.

Since assuming leadership of MDCB, Mr. Malema played a pivotal role in advancing the company’s mandate to grow, optimise, and diversify Botswana’s mining and minerals investment portfolio on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Botswana. His tenure was defined by integrity, professionalism, and a strong commitment to strengthening Botswana’s position as a globally respected mining jurisdiction.

Beyond his executive responsibilities, Mr. Malema contributed significantly to governance and industry leadership. He served on several boards, including De Beers Group and Minergy Coal Mine, and previously held positions such as Non-Executive Chairman of the Water Utilities Corporation and MDCB itself. His deep understanding of the mining sector and dedication to national development made him a highly valued leader within Botswana’s mining community.
