Mascom Wireless has launched a renewed strategic push aimed at strengthening its competitiveness in Botswana’s fast-shifting telecommunications sector, where the rivalry with Orange Botswana continues to tighten. The move follows recent market data indicating Orange holds 43% of the mobile market, edging ahead of Mascom at 42%.

The narrow gap has amplified pressure on Mascom to accelerate growth, improve customer engagement and expand its digital ecosystem. Central to this renewed focus is the company’s ambition to scale My Zaka, its mobile money platform. The service is being positioned to challenge Orange Money, which currently leads the mobile financial services segment with an estimated 78% share and more than 880,000 registered users.

The broader telecom landscape remains highly competitive, with operators differentiating themselves through pricing models, network reliability, customer service and digital product innovation. As mobile money continues to play an increasingly central role in how consumers transact, the competition between the two dominant players is expected to deepen.

For Botswana’s business community, Mascom’s revised strategy signals a more dynamic period ahead for the sector. Increased competition could encourage improvements in service delivery, digital solutions and customer experience, benefiting enterprises that rely on mobile connectivity and financial technology.

Whether Mascom’s momentum will shift the balance in market share remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that the battle for leadership in Botswana’s telecom industry is entering a more aggressive and innovation-driven phase.
