Lucara’s New Underground Development Deal Signals Fresh Opportunities for Botswana’s Mining Sector. Lucara Diamond Company has secured a key milestone in the progression of the Karowe underground expansion, announcing the signing of a major lateral development contract with Group R Mining and Exploration Botswana. The agreement positions the project for its next phase, marking one of the final steps needed before full-scale underground development begins.

Under the newly signed contract, Group R will be responsible for constructing all lateral underground access from both the production and ventilation shafts directly to the orebody. This work includes the development of the extraction level, crushing chamber, fine ore bins, pump stations, drilling horizons, workshops, and all interconnecting infrastructure. These components are essential to ensuring the project advances toward accessing kimberlite on schedule.

Mobilisation by Group R is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026, with underground development expected to begin in July 2026. Recruitment and work-permit processing will start early next year, with a clear focus on prioritising local employment and skills participation.

Lucara has indicated that detailed engineering work is already progressing, and an updated life-of-mine plan is currently being finalised to align with the expansion timeline. The project is considered a crucial step in extending Karowe’s operational lifespan and supporting Botswana’s position as a producer of high-value diamonds.

Lucara CEO William Lamb described the contract as a significant milestone that maintains strong project momentum as the company advances one of Botswana’s flagship mining developments. Group R CEO Hannes van Staden expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the project, emphasising the company’s commitment to safety, quality and operational excellence.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and businesses, the announcement signals potential opportunities in supply chains, support services, skills development and local procurement as the project transitions into a labour- and infrastructure-intensive stage.
