Lucara Unearths 1,019-Carat White Diamond and Rare Pink Stone at Karowe Mine. Lucara Diamond Corporation has announced the recovery of two significant stones from its Karowe mine in Botswana, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a global source of exceptional diamonds.

The discoveries include a 1,019.85-carat, non-gem-quality white diamond recovered through Lucara’s Mega Diamond Recovery (MDR) unit. The MDR system is specifically designed to detect and extract exceptionally large stones intact, preventing damage during recovery. This latest find marks the ninth diamond exceeding 1,000 carats retrieved from Karowe, and notably, the third of this size recovered in 2025 alone.

Alongside the large white stone, Lucara also unearthed a near-gem-quality, 37.42-carat pink type IIa diamond. Colored diamonds of this nature are rare, adding a unique dimension to the Karowe mine’s output.

Both stones were recovered from the EM/PK(S) section of the deposit, an area recognized for yielding large and high-value rough diamonds. The same section is a central focus of Lucara’s ongoing transition to underground mining, aimed at extending the mine’s operational lifespan and accessing deeper reserves.

For Botswana’s business community, the recovery underscores the continued importance of diamond mining to the economy, while also highlighting the role of advanced technology in enhancing extraction efficiency. The MDR unit demonstrates how innovation can add value to mining operations, reduce waste, and maximize returns on resources.

As Lucara continues to strengthen its position in the global diamond industry, such finds reflect both the scale of Botswana’s mineral wealth and the opportunities for local entrepreneurs to engage in sectors connected to mining, from supply chain services to value-added beneficiation.
