Lucara Presents 36.92-Carat Blue Diamond to President Boko. Lucara Botswana has unveiled a rare 36.92-carat blue Type IIB diamond, presenting the remarkable gemstone to President Advocate Duma Boko in a ceremony that underscores Botswana’s global reputation as a leading source of exceptional natural diamonds.
The diamond was extracted from the Karowe Mine in Letlhakane, a premier open-pit operation renowned for producing large, high-quality Type IIA diamonds. This latest discovery represents the second-largest blue diamond ever mined in Botswana, following the Okavango Blue, a 20.46-carat oval-shaped diamond discovered at the Orapa Mine in 2018.
Lucara emphasized that the presentation was not only a celebration of the rare find but also an opportunity to highlight the diamond sector’s ongoing contribution to Botswana’s gross domestic product and its role in sustaining national development.
The diamond was formally presented by Ms. Naseem Lahri, Managing Director of Lucara Botswana Proprietary Limited. Lahri noted that the discovery further strengthens Botswana’s position on the global stage, reinforcing the country’s reputation for producing some of the world’s most remarkable gemstones.
The engagement with President Boko provided a platform to reflect on the broader significance of Botswana’s diamond industry, which continues to serve as a cornerstone of the national economy. Diamonds remain central to infrastructure development, social investment, and the country’s international standing.
Industry observers view the unveiling of the 36.92-carat blue diamond as a milestone that adds to Botswana’s legacy of producing rare and valuable stones. The Karowe Mine, in particular, has become synonymous with extraordinary discoveries, further elevating its status within the global diamond sector.
As Botswana celebrates this achievement, the presentation of the diamond to the President symbolizes both national pride and the enduring importance of the diamond industry in shaping the country’s future.
