Local Manufacturing Shines at 2025 Botswana Consumer Fair. The 2025 Botswana Consumer Fair has placed the spotlight firmly on local manufacturing, showcasing a growing sector that is beginning to capture national attention. While traditionally dominated by diamond cutting and polishing, manufacturing in Botswana is steadily diversifying, with entrepreneurs venturing into industries such as clothing, textiles, and food processing.
Currently contributing around 5 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the sector is small but promising. Exhibitors at this year’s Consumer Fair highlighted how Batswana manufacturers are adding value to raw materials and building homegrown brands capable of competing locally and regionally.
Among the standout displays were locally produced textiles, garments, and leather products that demonstrated not only craftsmanship but also a strong push toward developing “Made in Botswana” fashion labels. Food processors also took centre stage, with stalls offering everything from packaged traditional snacks to bottled sauces and beverages, signaling growing interest in value-added agro-processing.
For entrepreneurs, the Consumer Fair provided both exposure and learning opportunities. Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) used the platform to network with potential buyers, distributors, and fellow business owners. The exhibition underscored the importance of market access, quality standards, and branding in ensuring the competitiveness of Botswana’s manufactured goods.
The steady momentum in manufacturing reflects wider national efforts to diversify the economy beyond diamonds. With continued investment, mentorship, and access to markets, the sector has potential to play a much larger role in job creation and economic sustainability.
The Consumer Fair served as a reminder that while challenges remain, the vision of a thriving local manufacturing base is becoming increasingly achievable. For Botswana’s entrepreneurs, it is a call to innovate, collaborate, and seize opportunities in value addition.
