Lobatse Tannery Refurbishment Project Nears Completion. The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) tannery refurbishment project in Lobatse is now 95 per cent complete, with final works expected to conclude by April 2026. The P218 million initiative represents a significant investment in Botswana’s meat and leather industry, aimed at boosting local economic activity and job creation.

Speaking during a council session, Lobatse Mayor Aron Ganakgomo highlighted the project as a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to revitalizing the town’s economy. He noted that the tannery will play a central role in strengthening Lobatse’s industrial base and supporting downstream opportunities in leather manufacturing.

Once operational, the tannery will process hides to the wet-blue stage, a critical step in the leather value chain. This development is expected to pave the way for advanced leather goods manufacturing at the planned Leather Park city, positioning Lobatse as a hub for value-added production.

Site agent Ermias Pelay confirmed in an interview that despite earlier delays, the project remains on track for completion in April. He emphasized that the refurbishment has progressed steadily and that the team is focused on meeting the deadline.

The tannery project is regarded as a cornerstone for Botswana’s broader economic diversification efforts, linking agriculture with industrial development. By modernizing facilities and expanding processing capacity, the initiative is expected to enhance competitiveness in regional and international markets.

As the final phase approaches, anticipation is building around the tannery’s potential to generate employment, stimulate local business activity, and contribute to sustainable growth in Lobatse and beyond.
