Lesedi Hosts Milestone as Kala Data Centre Nears First Production Phase. The Kala Data Centre project at Lesedi is approaching the start of its initial production phase following the completion of key infrastructure works, marking a notable step in combining coal bed methane gas with modular data centre technology in Botswana.

Tlou Energy entered into an agreement in early 2025 with Kala Data FZCO to develop a modular, containerised data centre at the Lesedi site. Under the arrangement, Kala is responsible for supplying, operating, and maintaining the data centre, while Tlou will provide coal bed methane gas to power on site electricity generation.

The first data centre unit has already been installed near the Lesedi 4 Gas Production Well, which is expected to supply fuel for the initial phase of operations. During the most recent reporting quarter, two 250kV gas fired generators arrived at the site after experiencing global shipping delays. The generators have since been placed on prepared concrete foundations next to the data centre module.

Earlier in 2025, construction of the main gas gathering line linking Lesedi 4 to the generator area was completed. Work is now focused on finishing the remaining section of the gas line to enable fuel delivery. Electrical connections between the generators and the data centre are also progressing. Once these systems are finalised, the facility is expected to begin initial production.

The installed infrastructure is designed to support up to 1 megawatt of power capacity. Initial operations will run below this level, with future expansion dependent on additional gas supply from further wells.

Project partners have described this stage as a proof of concept, noting that commercial power generation from Lesedi gas has not previously taken place. Initial output is expected to be modest as systems are tested and optimised.
