Lekidi Investments Charts Path for Football’s Financial Independence. The Botswana Football Association (BFA) has set its sights on transforming football into a financially self-sustaining industry through its commercial arm, Lekidi Investments. The initiative aims to leverage football’s potential beyond the pitch by commercialising assets, developing land, and upgrading infrastructure to attract investment and unlock new revenue streams.

BFA president Oabile Babitseng emphasized that the strategy is designed not only to sustain football but to position it as a driver of economic activity. “We’re not just trying to stay afloat; we’re preparing to sail,” he said, noting that profits generated will be reinvested into football development, particularly grassroots and youth programmes.

For Botswana entrepreneurs and businesses, the move presents opportunities for collaboration across multiple sectors, from real estate and construction to technology, marketing, and event management. Lekidi Investments’ plan to develop land and upgrade facilities could create demand for local expertise, while commercial partnerships may open doors for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to participate in football’s growing value chain.

To strengthen revenue generation, the BFA has partnered with established brands such as Thomas Hall, Digi Worx, Mascom, and Black Mobile. These collaborations are geared towards fan engagement initiatives that enhance supporter experience while raising funds for the sport.

Entrepreneurs in Botswana could benefit from exploring opportunities in merchandise, digital platforms, and service provision aligned with football events. With Lekidi Investments focusing on creating a sustainable business model, football is being positioned not only as entertainment but as a viable sector that can contribute to national economic growth.

The BFA’s vision signals a shift from dependence on external funding toward building a robust ecosystem where football, business, and community development intersect.
