Kenewendo Attends Groundbreaking of Khoemacau Zone 5 Expansion Project. Botswana’s mining sector marked a significant development as the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Hon. Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, arrived at the MMG Khoemacau Zone 5 site for the official groundbreaking ceremony of the expansion project.
The event signaled the commencement of an expansion that is expected to substantially increase production at the Khoemacau operation. According to information released at the site, the project will raise annual copper production capacity to 130,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate. In addition to copper output, the expansion will also generate associated silver production exceeding 4 million ounces per year.
The Zone 5 expansion forms part of ongoing development activities at the Khoemacau Copper Mining operations and represents a major step in scaling up output. Once operational, the increased capacity is set to elevate Botswana’s overall copper production to levels not previously achieved.
Minister Kenewendo’s presence at the groundbreaking underscored the importance of the project within the country’s minerals and energy portfolio. The expansion aligns with broader efforts to strengthen Botswana’s mining sector through value creation and increased production capacity.
Khoemacau Copper Mining, operated by MMG, has become one of Botswana’s notable mining developments in recent years, with copper and silver forming the core of its output. The Zone 5 project is expected to play a central role in the mine’s future production profile.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together representatives from government, the mining company, and other stakeholders to mark the formal start of construction activities. No timelines for completion were announced at the event.
As Botswana continues to position mining as a key contributor to economic activity, the expansion of Khoemacau’s Zone 5 is viewed as a notable development within the sector. The project’s anticipated increase in copper and silver output highlights the growing scale of mineral production taking place in the country.
