Kazungula Border Post Generates P2 Million Daily, Strengthening Regional Trade Corridor. The Kazungula Border Post is generating approximately P2 million in daily revenue, underscoring its role as one of Africa’s most critical gateways for trade and logistics.

During a media tour of the facility, Chief Public Relations Officer at Botswana’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Tiro Kganela, described the border as the “heartbeat of the North–South Corridor,” a vital artery linking Southern Africa to markets across the continent.

Situated along this corridor, the border facilitates the movement of thousands of trucks monthly, carrying food commodities, mining inputs, and industrial supplies. Food products destined for Zambia account for a significant share of traffic, requiring stringent inspection and clearance processes. Mining commodities, particularly copper bound for the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia’s northern mining belt, form another major category of cargo.

While operational efficiency is reported to be high, truck operators note periodic delays. Clearance procedures for food items, warehouse verification requirements, and mining exports remain the most common bottlenecks. On the Zambian side, more than 1,000 clearing agents manually register trucks, with some transporters waiting two to three days for processing.

Kazungula operates under the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) framework, designed to streamline cross-border procedures. The recently formalised Kazungula Bridge Authority (KBA) is expected to enhance efficiency further by consolidating payments into a single transaction system. Currently, each truck pays approximately P2,000 in border charges collected by the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).

Authorities from both Botswana and Zambia have signalled imminent operational harmonisation, with Zambia emphasizing the urgent need for digitisation to replace manual systems. Kganela highlighted opportunities for technology-driven optimisation, including artificial intelligence tools and digital applications to pre-alert authorities of incoming consignments.

With its daily revenue and strategic position, Kazungula Border Post remains a cornerstone of regional trade integration, poised to strengthen continental commerce as digitisation advances.
