Jindal Mmamabula Energy Project Reaches Major MMilestone. The Jindal Mmamabula Energy Project, one of Botswana’s largest private-sector industrial investments, is accelerating as construction gains momentum. Last week, the project marked a significant milestone with the arrival of a 180-tonne boiler for Unit 1, signaling the transition from planning to active construction and turning vision into tangible progress.
The project, designed to deliver 600MW of power to the national grid, is expected to enhance Botswana’s energy security and drive industrial growth. In 2023, the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and Jindal Energy signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 300MW coal-fired power plant at Mmamabula, later expanded to 600MW. Electricity generated will be supplied to BPC under a 30-year agreement.
Officially launched in October 2023, the initiative represents an estimated investment of over BWP 28 billion, making it the largest foreign direct investment in Botswana’s history. The project is anticipated to create approximately 5,000 jobs during construction and about 1,000 permanent positions once operational.
Jindal Africa has committed to expediting development, with electricity expected to feed into the national grid by 2028. The company also holds mining licenses for over 3 billion tonnes of coal in the East Mmamabula coalfields, positioning itself to potentially scale production for regional and export markets.
The arrival of the boiler underscores the scale and precision behind the project, while local impact continues to grow through job creation, skills development, and support for citizen-owned businesses. As construction accelerates, the Jindal Mmamabula Energy Project stands as a cornerstone of Botswana’s industrial transformation and energy future.
