Inflation Dips to 1.1% as Pula Depreciation Aims to Support Exports. Botswana’s inflation fell to 1.1% in July 2025, its lowest in years and well beneath the Bank of Botswana’s target range of 3–6%. The slowdown reflects softer price pressures across the economy, offering some relief to consumers but raising new considerations for businesses and exporters.
Despite the easing inflation, the central bank kept its key lending rate steady at 1.90% for the sixth consecutive meeting. Analysts note that maintaining this level provides stability for borrowers and investors while the Bank implements other measures to stimulate economic activity.
One such measure is the accelerated annual depreciation of the pula, now at 2.76%. This move is aimed at making Botswana’s exports more competitive in international markets and safeguarding foreign reserves. For businesses engaged in mining, manufacturing, and agriculture, the weaker pula could help improve profit margins when selling abroad. However, entrepreneurs who rely on imports may face rising costs for raw materials, machinery, and finished goods, requiring careful financial planning.
Inflation averaged 2.1% in the first quarter of 2025 and is forecast to rebound to around 3.5% by the end of the year. This expected increase would return inflation closer to the central bank’s comfort zone, balancing affordability for households with sustainability for producers.
For Botswana’s entrepreneurs, the current environment offers both opportunities and challenges. Export-oriented enterprises may benefit from currency movements, while local businesses dependent on imports must manage tighter margins. The outlook highlights the importance of innovation, efficiency, and diversification in ensuring resilience against external shocks.
As global markets remain uncertain, Botswana’s entrepreneurs and business leaders will be watching closely how these monetary and exchange rate policies shape competitiveness and growth in the months ahead.
