India’s President Strengthens Economic Ties with Botswana During Visit to Diamond Trading Company. The President of India, Her Excellency Droupadi Murmu, visited the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) as part of her official State Visit to the Republic of Botswana, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
Accompanied by senior officials, President Murmu toured DTCB’s operations to gain first-hand insight into Botswana’s diamond sorting, valuation, and trading processes. The visit highlighted Botswana’s globally recognised leadership in responsible mineral management and sustainable resource development.
Speaking during the engagement, Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Kenewendo, noted that the visit offered an opportunity to showcase Botswana’s advanced diamond industry and its commitment to transparency and value addition. “Our diamond sector continues to stand as a model for ethical and sustainable development, contributing meaningfully to our national economy and communities,” she said.
President Murmu commended Botswana for its achievements in the diamond trade, particularly its focus on beneficiation and sustainable industry practices. She also expressed appreciation for the exceptional quality of Botswana’s diamonds, which have helped position the country as a global benchmark in the industry.
The visit further reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between Botswana and India, especially in the areas of trade, minerals, and energy cooperation. India remains one of the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing hubs, while Botswana is among the leading producers of gem-quality diamonds — creating strong potential for continued collaboration across the value chain.
The engagement at DTCB forms part of broader efforts to enhance economic and diplomatic ties, paving the way for deeper investment and knowledge-sharing between the two nations.
