IMF Urges Botswana to Diversify Economy Amid Diamond Market Challenges. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has cautioned Botswana against repeating the economic pitfalls experienced by Zambia and Nigeria, emphasizing the need for diversification away from diamond dependency.

At the Bank of Botswana’s 50th Anniversary Symposium, IMF African Department Director Abebe Aemro Selassie highlighted the risks of over-reliance on a single commodity. “Commodity dependence without adequate buffers is dangerous,” Selassie remarked, drawing parallels to Zambia’s copper crisis and Nigeria’s oil downturns.

Botswana’s economic growth has slowed significantly, with projections for 2024 revised to 1% from an earlier estimate of 3.6%, primarily due to decreased diamond production. The IMF also forecasts a widening budget deficit, urging the government to prioritize high-return infrastructure projects.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and businesses, the IMF’s message underscores the importance of innovation and diversification in sustaining economic stability.
