HATAB 40th Annual Conference Opens in Maun, Focuses on Tourism-Led Growth. The 40th Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB) Annual Conference officially commenced today in Maun, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders under the theme: “Botswana Tourism: Exploring the Conditions for Growth.”
President Duma Boko delivered the keynote address, highlighting the strategic importance of tourism as Botswana’s second-largest economic contributor after diamonds. He emphasized that, with effective policy frameworks and investment, tourism could surpass the mining sector in driving sustainable national development.
President Boko called on stakeholders to collaborate closely with government in identifying sector challenges and proposing practical solutions. He stressed that informed dialogue and inclusive legislative input will empower Parliament to pass reforms that genuinely support the sector’s long-term viability.
Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, also addressed the conference, announcing that the Ministry is actively reviewing the Tourism Act of 2009. He noted that simplifying licensing processes and enhancing the investment climate are top priorities for unlocking the sector’s full potential.
The Minister further announced the expansion of game-viewing routes and the upgrading of road infrastructure in key eco-tourism regions. These initiatives aim to improve accessibility, boost visitor numbers, and support sustainable tourism practices.
Following the opening session, President Boko and dignitaries toured the exhibition area, where the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) presented an interactive showcase of Botswana’s diverse tourism products. The BTO’s Acting CEO, Mr. Kgotso Ollyn, guided the tour, highlighting innovations from across the tourism value chain.
