Greater Gaborone Launches P534 Million Smart Traffic System to Modernise Urban Mobility. Botswana has officially launched the Greater Gaborone Traffic Management System, a P534.16 million infrastructure investment aimed at strengthening traffic control and road management across the capital and surrounding areas. The project forms part of the Botswana Integrated Transport Project and was officially launched in Gaborone by President Advocate Duma Boko.

At the centre of the initiative is a Centralised Traffic Control Centre equipped with smart traffic signals, real-time traffic monitoring technology and 24-hour surveillance capabilities. The system is designed to support coordinated traffic control, monitor road conditions and manage incidents across Greater Gaborone.

The Traffic Management System covers Gaborone city as well as key satellite settlements, including Mogoditshane, Mmopane, Metsimotlhabe, Tlokweng and parts of the Kgatleng District. By consolidating traffic management operations into a single control hub, the system enables coordinated signal control and data-driven traffic monitoring across the wider urban area.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Noah Salakae described the completion of the Traffic Management Centre as an important milestone in Botswana’s transport infrastructure development. He said the project reflects government’s focus on deploying modern infrastructure to support safer and more efficient urban mobility.

The project has been implemented through a Design, Build, Maintain, Operate and Transfer contract model. It is now moving into its operation and maintenance phase, with the contract structure intended to support long-term system functionality, performance management and technology continuity.

According to project details, the system is expected to contribute to improved traffic flow, enhanced road safety and more efficient incident response through real-time monitoring and coordinated control. The use of smart technologies is also intended to strengthen traffic oversight and support emergency response coordination.

The launch of the Greater Gaborone Traffic Management System marks a key development in Botswana’s efforts to modernise urban transport infrastructure as vehicle numbers and urban activity continue to grow across the capital region.
