Gambling Addiction Rising Among Botswana’s Retirees, New Report Reveals. A new report by the Gambling Authority of Botswana has raised concerns over rising gambling-related problems among the country’s most vulnerable groups, with retirees emerging as the most affected demographic.
Presenting the findings, Dr. Onkokame Mothobi revealed that 36.3% of retirees in Botswana are facing gambling-related challenges. This figure surpasses that of the unemployed at 20.8% and the employed at 18.5%. The study suggests that the absence of regular income and structured daily routines among retirees significantly contributes to their increased susceptibility to gambling.
Dr. Mothobi noted that many unemployed individuals and pensioners turn to gambling as a perceived opportunity to improve their financial circumstances. “While gambling may be seen as entertainment or a chance to earn money, for many, it becomes a source of distress rather than relief,” he said.
The report further points to a worrying trend of gambling addiction symptoms among affected individuals. These include withdrawal behaviours, rising debt burdens, and emotional dependency on betting activities.
The findings raise questions about the role of social support systems and financial literacy education, especially among retired and unemployed populations.
Stakeholders have been urged to take a more proactive approach to mitigate the risks associated with gambling. This includes targeted awareness campaigns, mental health support, and policies that promote responsible gaming.
