Gaborone Launches City Tourism Initiative to Boost Urban Tourism and Economic Growth. Botswana has taken a bold step in expanding its tourism sector with the official launch of the City Tourism Initiative in Gaborone. The ceremony, led by the Acting President of the Republic of Botswana, His Honour Ndaba Gaolathe, signaled a new chapter for urban tourism in the country.

The initiative aims to complement Botswana’s globally renowned wilderness attractions by positioning cities like Gaborone as destinations in their own right. Speaking at the launch, Acting President Gaolathe emphasized that tourism is a critical driver of economic diversification, with the potential to create jobs, support small businesses, and reduce reliance on mining. He reaffirmed that this aligns with the government’s Economic Transformation Programme, which seeks to unlock growth in new sectors.

The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Honourable Wynter Boipuso Mmolotsi, outlined the broader vision for the project. He highlighted efforts already underway, including the development of walking trails, tourism circuits, cultural showcases, and the promotion of local cuisine. These initiatives, he noted, are designed to enrich the visitor experience while creating opportunities for entrepreneurs in hospitality, entertainment, and creative industries.

The Ministry has partnered with the private sector, government departments, and key stakeholders to lay the foundation for this programme. Beyond Gaborone, the initiative will be extended to other towns and cities, ensuring that tourism contributes more inclusively to the national economy.

Also present at the launch were Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) leaders, including Board Vice Chairperson Ms. Kedibonye Proctor, board members, and Chief Executive Officer Ms. Keitumetse Setlang. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort required to build a sustainable urban tourism model.

For entrepreneurs, the City Tourism Initiative presents opportunities in cultural tourism, hospitality services, fashion, food, and events — all industries with potential to thrive as Botswana redefines its tourism landscape.
