Francistown to Welcome 2026 Tati River Cup as BTO Backs Sports Tourism. Francistown is set to host the 2026 Tati River Cup on Saturday, 8 August, with the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) partnering with the tournament as part of efforts to promote sports tourism and position the city as a destination for major events.
The tournament will take place at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 10:00am and continue throughout the day.
According to BTO, the competition will bring together leading local and regional football clubs, providing a platform to showcase football while highlighting the contribution of sports tourism to domestic travel and the local economy.
The organisation said the event forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Francistown’s profile as a vibrant host city for sporting and entertainment events.
Several government leaders and distinguished guests are expected to attend the tournament. These include the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, the Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Hon. Tiroeaone Ntsima, and former Vice President of Botswana, Mr. Slumber Tsogwane.
The Tati River Cup is expected to combine competitive football with entertainment, offering spectators a full-day programme centred on sport and community engagement.
BTO’s involvement reflects its continued support for initiatives that promote tourism through sporting events and encourage travel to destinations across Botswana. By partnering with the tournament, the organisation aims to showcase Francistown’s ability to host events that attract visitors while supporting the country’s tourism offering.
The tournament is expected to draw football supporters, local residents and visitors to Obed Itani Chilume Stadium for a day of matches and entertainment.
