Francistown City Tourism Initiative Aims to Strengthen Urban Travel Experience. The City Tourism Initiative has been introduced as part of a broader national strategy to diversify Botswana’s tourism sector and stimulate economic growth by repositioning urban centres as tourism destinations.

The initiative reflects efforts to expand tourism offerings beyond the country’s established wildlife and safari-based attractions. With the economy facing the need to diversify, the City Tourism Initiative seeks to leverage urban environments as complementary tourism products within the national landscape.

In Francistown, the City Tourism Initiative is focused on upgrading and aligning infrastructure, public spaces, and connectivity to enhance the overall visitor experience. The programme is designed to support tourism growth by improving the functionality and appeal of urban spaces for both visitors and residents.

According to information shared on the initiative, City Tourism places emphasis on coordinated development within urban centres to ensure that infrastructure and public amenities contribute to a more accessible and engaging tourism environment. The approach aims to strengthen the role of cities in the tourism value chain while supporting local economic activity.

Members of the public have been invited to attend the official City Tourism 2026 event, which will take place in Francistown. The event is scheduled for 24 January 2026 at Central Park, with proceedings set to begin at 14:00.

The Vice President and Minister of Finance, Mr Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, is expected to officiate the event. The occasion forms part of activities linked to the rollout of the City Tourism Initiative in Francistown.

The event will provide an opportunity for stakeholders and residents to engage with the City Tourism concept and its intended role in shaping urban tourism development. The initiative aligns with national objectives aimed at broadening the tourism base and strengthening economic participation across different sectors.

Francistown’s inclusion in the City Tourism Initiative positions the city within efforts to enhance urban tourism offerings. The programme highlights the role of cities in supporting tourism growth through improved infrastructure, connectivity, and public spaces.

The City Tourism 2026 event marks a milestone in the ongoing implementation of urban-focused tourism initiatives within Botswana.
