FNB Botswana Launches Digital Savings Account to Formalise Community Group Contributions. First National Bank Botswana has introduced a new savings product designed to formalise and support one of the country’s most enduring financial traditions, group based communal saving. The newly launched FNB Motshelo Savings Account aims to provide a structured banking solution for communities that pool resources to achieve shared financial goals.
The product reflects the long standing practice known as motshelo, widely used across Botswana by families, friends, colleagues and social groups seeking collective financial progress. Through the account, groups can manage contributions within a formal banking environment while maintaining the collaborative spirit that defines the tradition.
According to First National Bank Botswana, the account offers a digital platform that enables members to monitor activity, receive transaction alerts and coordinate savings more efficiently.
Retail Director Monkgogi Mogorosi said the initiative reflects the continued importance of communal saving practices and provides a secure and transparent system designed for modern financial management. She said the product brings together traditional cooperation and digital convenience, allowing members to access information, adjust participation and manage funds within a regulated banking framework.
The account includes zero monthly fees, free deposit options, interest of up to 3.35% per annum and a maximum balance of P2.5 million. Groups are required to nominate three signatories responsible for operating the account, while additional members may be added digitally in accordance with banking requirements.
The offering is available across branches and is intended to provide a practical structure for collective saving while maintaining the cultural foundations of community cooperation.
By formalising group contributions within a regulated system, the bank says the product supports transparency, accountability and shared financial planning for participating members.
This launch represents an effort to integrate established saving traditions with structured banking services, offering communities a formal mechanism to organise funds, track progress and pursue common financial objectives.
