Dithubaruba Cultural Festival Showcases Heritage and Sparks Economic Opportunities. The 17th edition of the Dithubaruba Cultural Festival brought Ntsweng Heritage Site – Kwa ga Mmakgosi – to life yesterday, attracting visitors from across Botswana and neighbouring countries. The festival, themed “Ngwao ya rona e a Tshela” – Heritage in Motion, celebrated the rich traditions of the Bakwena while providing a platform for cultural exchange, community engagement, and entrepreneurial activity.

Officiating the event, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, highlighted the importance of culture as a driver of national identity and socio-economic development. He noted that the Ministry, in partnership with the Kgosi Sechele I Museum, invested P60 million to transform Ntsweng into a permanent cultural precinct, anchored by the forthcoming museum. The initiative is expected to empower communities, boost tourism, and position Kweneng as a cultural destination of choice.

For entrepreneurs, the festival provided opportunities beyond cultural appreciation. Local artisans, food vendors, and tourism operators benefited from high visitor turnout, demonstrating how cultural events can stimulate small business growth and community-led economic initiatives. The festival also offers insight into leveraging heritage as a marketable asset, with performances, exhibitions, and heritage walks acting as both entertainment and business drivers.

Hon. Mmolotsi commended the Kgosi Sechele I Museum Trust, the Dithubaruba Organising Committee, and partners for turning culture into a catalyst for economic transformation. He encouraged Batswana to innovate and benchmark local events, aiming to elevate Botswana’s cultural showcases to international standards.

Beyond the official program, the festival featured lively performances, storytelling, and cultural exhibitions, reinforcing its role in preserving Bakwena identity while uniting communities. The event highlighted the potential for cultural heritage to intersect with entrepreneurship, tourism, and sustainable development in Botswana.
