Diamond Pipeline Training Strengthens Media Reporting on Botswana’s Key Industry. A coalition of Botswana’s leading diamond stakeholders—Debswana, Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB), De Beers Global Sightholder Sales (DBGSS), and Okavango Diamond Company (ODC)—this week rolled out a four-day training programme designed to capacitate local journalists with knowledge of the diamond pipeline.
The initiative responds to growing recognition that accurate and well-informed reporting is essential to strengthening public understanding of Botswana’s most vital industry. Organisers noted that gaps in media coverage have sometimes led to misrepresentation of the diamond sector, prompting the need for structured training.
The programme provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the entire diamond value chain, from exploration and mining through to sorting, valuing, cutting and polishing, sales, and final polished valuation. The objective was to ensure that journalists are better equipped to deliver reporting that is not only accurate but also provides depth and context to readers.
To achieve this, the training combined presentations, site visits, and direct interaction with industry experts. Journalists toured Orapa Mine, where they observed the pit and processing plants, and visited the Adrian Gale Museum. They were also taken through key stages of the pipeline at DTC Botswana’s sorting and valuation facilities, DBGSS, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and selected local diamond manufacturing factories.
For Botswana’s business community, the initiative is a significant step toward enhancing the transparency and reputation of the diamond industry. Better-informed reporting contributes to investor confidence, supports public trust, and ensures that industry developments are communicated with accuracy. The training further demonstrates the sector’s commitment to building capacity not only within its workforce but also among the media professionals who play a role in shaping its narrative.
