Debswana and De Beers Commit Over P1.1 Million to Support Team Botswana. Debswana Diamond Company, in partnership with De Beers Group, has announced a joint contribution of BWP 1,160,000 to Team Botswana, following the athletes’ strong performance at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships.

The financial support is positioned as both recognition of the team’s recent success and a reflection of how Botswana’s diamond industry continues to play a role in advancing national development. For local entrepreneurs and businesses, this gesture highlights the broader economic and social value generated through Botswana’s natural resources, extending beyond mining to support other sectors such as sports.

Debswana has a long history of sports development support, spanning nearly four decades. Its facilities at the company’s mines have hosted camps for various sporting codes, and from 2022 to 2024 the company ran a dedicated programme focused on athletics. These initiatives contributed to several milestones, including international achievements that placed Botswana firmly on the global sporting stage.

The partnership between Debswana and De Beers further underlines the importance of collaboration between private enterprises and national stakeholders. A key example is the recognition of Letsile Tebogo, who was recently appointed De Beers Group’s first Global Ambassador. This milestone is a demonstration of how corporate investment in local talent can yield international visibility for Botswana.

According to Debswana, the pledged funds will be distributed among athletes, coaches, and the medical team, with allocations guided by an agreed framework with the Botswana Athletics Association and the Botswana National Sport Commission.

For Botswana’s business community, the investment reinforces the potential of sports as a sector that can be nurtured alongside mining, tourism, and other industries, creating new avenues for economic participation and youth empowerment.
