Debswana and BPC Partner to Boost Renewable Energy Use in Mining Sector. Debswana Diamond Company has taken a significant step toward its sustainability goals by signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) to source renewable energy for its mining operations. This collaboration marks a strategic milestone in Botswana’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
The agreement will enable Debswana to purchase electricity backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), an internationally recognized mechanism that confirms the origin of green power. This development aligns with Botswana’s broader commitment to sustainable development and the global climate agenda.
Debswana Managing Director Andrew Motsomi emphasized that the partnership is a key move in their quest to reduce their carbon footprint. “This MoA supports our ambition to become carbon neutral across all operations by 2030, as outlined in our Building Forever Strategy,” Motsomi said. He added that transitioning to renewables would enhance energy efficiency and reduce reliance on diesel-powered systems.
BPC CEO David Kgoboko highlighted the national importance of the agreement. “This collaboration enables Debswana to lead in decarbonizing the mining sector. It also reflects the progress being made under Botswana’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which promotes a more diversified and cleaner energy mix,” he said.
Mpho Mosate, Debswana’s Executive Head of Safety and Sustainability, noted that the company has an energy demand of 410 MW and that RECs will provide traceability and assurance of energy provenance. “These certificates are critical to verifying the renewable source of the electricity used in our operations,” she explained.
For Botswana-based entrepreneurs, especially those in the renewable energy and technology sectors, this partnership signals increasing opportunities within the green economy as large corporations seek sustainable solutions. The move further underscores the growing role of private sector-led climate action in Botswana’s economic transformation.
