Debswana and BDC Forge Strategic Partnership to Drive Botswana’s Economic Shift. Debswana and the Botswana Development Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at accelerating economic diversification and reducing Botswana’s reliance on diamond revenues.

The agreement sets the foundation for a collaborative effort to unlock new industries by building a pipeline of future investments. This includes funding businesses, supporting the development of emerging sectors, and expanding existing industries beyond the diamond value chain.

Debswana Chief Financial Officer Ian Modubule said the move is influenced by the risks associated with dependence on a single commodity. He noted that fluctuations in the diamond market have broader economic implications, affecting not only the company but the national economy. As a result, Debswana is shifting towards a more outward-looking strategy that prioritises partnerships to create new growth opportunities.

Managing Director Andrew Motsumi described the agreement as more than a formal arrangement, positioning it as a shared commitment to drive economic transformation through coordinated investment and collaboration. He indicated that the partnership will explore opportunities across multiple sectors as part of efforts to build a more diversified and sustainable business portfolio.

From the BDC side, Managing Director Oteng Keabetswe welcomed the partnership, stating that it aligns with the corporation’s mandate to support industrial development. He highlighted a focus on strengthening value chains, developing new industries, and creating sustainable employment opportunities that contribute to long-term economic growth.

Both organisations view the agreement as the beginning of a long-term collaboration aimed at enhancing economic resilience. By combining resources and expertise, the partnership is expected to support Botswana’s transition towards a broader economic base, with reduced dependence on diamonds and increased participation in diverse sectors.
