De Beers Reaffirms Sustainable Mining Commitment at Africa Biodiversity Summit in Gaborone. De Beers Group has reiterated its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship at the inaugural Africa Biodiversity Summit, held this week in Gaborone. The event, hosted by the African Union Commission in collaboration with the Government of Botswana, brings together leaders and stakeholders to discuss how biodiversity can drive Africa’s economic and social development.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Biodiversity for Socio-Economic Development, Tefo Molosiwa, Head of Policy and Planning for Safety, Sustainable Development, and Risk at De Beers, highlighted the company’s ongoing efforts to align diamond mining with sustainable growth.

Molosiwa reaffirmed that De Beers remains dedicated to safeguarding the long-term value of natural diamonds while ensuring that mining activities create positive outcomes for the countries and communities involved. He noted that the company’s Origin Strategy places the nations where De Beers operates — including Botswana — at the core of its sustainability agenda.

“Our countries of origin are very important stakeholders, and our Origin Strategy speaks directly to that — to the nations where we responsibly source our natural diamonds and to the communities surrounding our mines,” Molosiwa said.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and business community, De Beers’ continued focus on sustainability underscores growing opportunities in eco-friendly enterprise, green innovation, and conservation-linked partnerships. With the company targeting a net-positive impact on biodiversity by 2030, local businesses could see increased collaboration prospects in areas such as environmental services, research, and community development.

De Beers’ Diamond Route initiative — a network of lands set aside for wildlife conservation — remains a cornerstone of its biodiversity efforts, reflecting a long-term vision to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.
