Coffee Session Unpacks Digital Transformation Lessons for Startups. Entrepreneurs who attended the recent Coffee Session on Digital Transformation and Innovation for Startups walked away with more than just theory, thanks to an engaging presentation by Professor João Barros. Hosted in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa), the session offered real-world examples of how businesses—particularly in the automotive industry—have embraced digital tools to improve efficiency and profitability.

Professor Barros, an electrical engineer and entrepreneur with more than 25 years of experience in wireless networks, intelligent transportation systems, and edge AI, emphasized that digital transformation should have measurable impact. He reminded startups that the ultimate goal is either making more money or saving more money.

He further outlined three guiding principles for any business:

  • Build technology properly.
  • Stay obsessed with customers.
  • Never ignore profitability.

“Miss one, and you are out,” he cautioned, underscoring the importance of balance in a digital-first economy.

Another key takeaway for entrepreneurs was the value of consistent messaging. According to Barros, businesses must communicate their value repeatedly, with the same energy and enthusiasm, to build trust and attract customers.

For Botswana’s growing startup ecosystem, these insights provide a practical framework. Digital adoption is not only about upgrading systems but also about rethinking processes and strengthening customer engagement. Local entrepreneurs were encouraged to view digital transformation as a driver of competitiveness, opening doors to scale and innovate in both domestic and international markets.

As digital adoption continues to accelerate globally, platforms like the Coffee Session are becoming vital spaces for knowledge sharing, networking, and inspiring actionable change among emerging businesses in Botswana.
