City Tourism Marathon Showcases Gaborone’s Economic and Wellness Potential. Gaborone came alive today as the City Tourism Activation Marathon took centre stage in commemoration of World Tourism Day 2025, held under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” The event highlighted the growing link between wellness, tourism, and economic opportunity, drawing runners, exhibitors, and industry stakeholders.

Acting Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Gen. Pius Mokgware, underscored tourism’s role in driving economic growth, preserving culture, and fostering social cohesion. He emphasized that tourism extends beyond leisure, providing opportunities for entrepreneurs to build businesses around hospitality, events, wellness, and supporting services.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Mr. Boatametse Modukanele, encouraged participants and residents to embrace domestic tourism. He noted that initiatives such as the marathon will, over time, extend across the country, creating opportunities for local businesses and communities to participate in Botswana’s tourism value chain

The event, coordinated by Fearless Fitness Club in collaboration with key partners and sponsors, also served as a platform for entrepreneurs to connect with potential clients and showcase services in fitness, health, travel, and lifestyle. For businesses, such gatherings highlight the importance of aligning with national tourism initiatives to tap into new markets.

Acknowledgment was given to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO), board members, management, and staff who not only supported but also took part in the marathon. Their participation reinforced the government’s commitment to working with the private sector to build a stronger, more resilient tourism industry.

As Botswana positions itself as a premier destination, events like the City Tourism Marathon show how tourism and wellness can spark opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable growth.
