CIPA Encourages Designers to Protect Furniture and Product Creations with Affordable IP Registration. The Companies and Intellectual Property Authority (CIPA) is encouraging Botswana’s entrepreneurs, artisans, and manufacturers to take advantage of its affordable product design registration services, which now allow for the legal protection of furniture designs and other product innovations starting from as little as P40.
In a statement released by CIPA, the Authority urged creators in the furniture, home décor, industrial design, and manufacturing sectors to recognise their work as valuable intellectual property (IP) and take the necessary steps to secure legal protection.
Registering a design with CIPA provides creators with exclusive rights to their original designs, preventing unauthorised copying, reproduction, or sale of their creations. For Botswana’s growing base of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in the design, craft, and manufacturing industries, this step can be instrumental in preserving brand value and competitive advantage.
“Whether you’re designing a unique chair, a lighting fixture, or an innovative product for the market, your design is a business asset,” the Authority stated. “By registering it, you are safeguarding your creative investment and setting a foundation for growth and credibility.”
The registration process is open to both individuals and companies, and CIPA provides support through its IP team, which can be reached at ip@cipa.co.bw for guidance on how to begin the application.
For entrepreneurs, furniture makers, and product innovators looking to scale their businesses or export their creations, having a registered design not only offers protection but also enhances the product’s commercial potential in both local and international markets.
